Link Typo

For some reason 356 is repeated twice in the link. I had to erase one manually to get it to work.

“So,” she said. “That should get the garlic stuff out of your eyes.”

For some reason, it was right at that point that I completely lost it and couldn't stop laughing...

Xenophobia (mental disadvantage, -15/-30)

Maybe the Leightons will snitch on Kiersta for keeping alcohol in her room. If they're quick, she might be out of there before she gets killed. Or eaten.

“Look, I’m sick of dealing with everybody’s shit. People treat you badly, human oppression, I get all that… that’s no excuse for you people to act like animals all the damn time. It’s hard enough being a resident advisor in this dorm.”

And what excuse do the human students have? >:=)>

Actually, apart from the anime-style duel, what major disruptions have there been? What has happened that wouldn't have happened in a human dorm? Has anything actually threatened Kiersta's health or safety? There might have been other events that we haven't seen, but nothing that has left marks.

I think that Kiersta might be a xenophobe, in the strict sense of the term. Being among all those non-humans just freaks her out. She was able to cover it up initially, but then had to conceal it by withdrawing from view. She is stressed out all the time by it, and can't sleep because of her nerves. She drinks to try to calm her nerves and has probably drunk herself unconscious in order to get some sleep on more than one occasion. It isn't necessary for her floormates to do anything, it isn't even necessary for her to develop specific fears about what each one might do, she will just have a vague but overpowering sense of dread.

She'd like to be out of Harlowe, but since she probably did her unsuccessful darndest to avoid getting billeted there in the first place, she knows there's no way she's going to get a reallocation now. Even if the student housing department was sophisticated enough to make distinction between xenophobia and race hatred, they wouldn't be able to do anything about her situation. They could release her from her RAship, but she needs that in order to make ends meet.

If the Leightons were that sophisticated, they would be able to make more creative trouble by reporting on Kiersta's state of health (which would take more than a quick tidy-up to conceal). And blaming Mack.

Re: Xenophobia (mental disadvantage, -15/-30)

I'll be honest, I have trouble disagreeing with Kiersta. I'm starting to wonder if self control is a completely foreign concept in Harlowe.

Trina

“Fucking hell, Trina… do you believe every rumor you make up?” I asked.

Trina has got to be my least favourite character ever. Everyone complains about Amaranth, or Iason, but can you imagine having to put up with Trina as a major character?

Re: Trina

I hate Trina so goddamn much that it makes me see red every time she opens her mouth. I don't blame Mack for almost losing it with her...accusing her of fucking raping TWO? Bitch needs her ass destroyed.

on Mack's Self Control (or lack thereof)

I know most people wouldn't complain about a mermaid going down on them, but here's my beef with the situation:

Mack knows better. She knows she should say no to Feejee. Why can't she seem to do it? When she first came to school, her ass was so tight you could feed her coal and she'd crap out a diamond. If she was solicited for sex, she'd be horrified. Now she can't say no (well, she can until they start without listening to her, then she stops saying it). How did this switch inside of her become permanently flipped?

I guess what I'm saying is, why doesn't Mack have ANY self control over this?

Re: on Mack's Self Control (or lack thereof)

Now I know this only justifies this once, and I completely agree with you on the subject.... but THIS time I can answer the question... Ever gotten your nipples pierced? ... THAT'S why... this time anyhow. ... No excuse for anything or anytime other.

So where exactly
Did Mackenzie last leave her
Borrowed hand mirror?

Trina the Triclops
Should have been cited for her

Spicy tales about
Mackenzie and the mermaid

Ka ha ha ha ha ha! Maybe now Feejee will finally back off for good. Someone should have dealt with her earlier. Sure, it was nice of her to help with the garlic salt thing, if she was even being nice at all, but with her GONE from Mack's life, things will be smoother.

Unless she decides keeping Mackenzie as a chew toy is worth accepting she's bisexual, and Amaranth encourages it yet again. Then we're screwed.

And Trina needs to skate into an AIDS tree. Hard.

The question about the mirror was rhetorical. Insofar as I know, Mackenzie last used it in Chapter 332: Where Credit Is Due, when she took it out her bag to reflect Ian about the TWO's Day Party. I bring it up here and now because we only have Trina's word that she got the mirror from her mother. Given that most of what Trina says isn't true (however much she may believe it) and that Mackenzie doesn't remember where she put it, I'm inclined to doubt Trina's account.

I think it's worth noting at this point that Kiersta is judging everyone in Harlowe Hall by Human standards of conduct, despite her knowing better, as evidenced by her reference to "racial exemption" to justify her own alcohol consumption. Mackenzie accepts being judged by Human standards because considers herself a Human with cursed blood and would rather die than admit to any aspect of her Infernal heritage, but I doubt that the imposition of rules written to cover Human conduct would stand up to a legal challenge, given Leda's public behavior just a short time before.

If Amaranth had been in the bathroom with Mackenzie and Feejee, Kiersta wouldn't have been able to say a thing about what may or may not have happened, because anything done with a Nymph is legal by Imperial decree. I don't think we've heard the last of this, whether or not Mackenzie knuckles under per usual.

I just wanted to point out that Amaranth is not going to listen to a word Mack has to say about the injustice of the situation. All she's going to hear is that Mack called Trina a name, and therefore nothing else gets any consideration.

Mmm-hm. And while I support anyone in the dorms-- Harlowe, Ian's hall, or our universe's dorms-- learning some self-control and appropriate conflict ressolution, you can't always hug it out. If someone lurches into your room, drunk, and tries to grope you, a shove and a "Fuck off!" are appropriate. If your roommate is being an asshole, telling them "Stop being an asshole" is (provided you have the kind of relationship that supports honesty) okay. Simpering and being a sponge for abuse isn't helpful, and tends to encourage bullies to keep bullying. Amaranth needs to pull her head out of wherever she keeps things and accept that sometimes, being stern is necessary, and that sometimes, a lapse like this is forgivable; the larger story is important but she just has to micromanage Mack right back into Emo Basement Kid.

Question?

I'm trying to recall but it's late, have any of Macks friends actually tried to find out what her life was like before she came to MU?
I'm kind of curious what Ian's take in particular would be if he knew the whole story. So far Dee and Callahan are the only ones I can pick out that are trying to give the poor thing the help she kind of needs. Dee through meditation and spiritual guidance and Callahan giving the self confidence and discipline that comes with martial arts.

I do get the sense that Amaranth hasn't grasped the concept that her nymph sense can only tell her what a person "wants" not so much what they "need". Mack's story is in some ways a parallel to Two's and I don't see Amaranth thinking that Two needs a good paddling.

If I missed a part, let me know. Would love to go back and reread it.

Am I the only one worried about Ian's supposed screwing around with Callahan? Out of this whole chapter it's, truthfully, the thing that keeps popping up in my mind and bothering me the most.

I'm sure it could be just another rumor they're spreading around, yet another thing to just break Mackenzie down with. Since the last chapter with them ( Ian & Callahan ) together ended up in her waving her vagoo everywhere in front of Ian and offering him massage with the oil she used.

Personally I think Ian's the only one that has his head on pretty straight except for the anger/stress issue he needs to deal with in a better manner. That is, out of the people Mackenzie is sleeping with. He is a good dominate for Mackenzie since they're both learning about it, perhaps not from the best teacher. Just because she's a nymph doesn't mean she can really teach it, after all she is only 17 and still learning in a sense. Usually tries to be polite and understanding when dealing with his girlfriend's other lovers and situations and to me is just a likable character I don't want to see gone. This, of course, is just coming out of me because he reminds me of my boyfriend minus the musical instrument, misplaced anger and the magic.

I am typing this quit groggy as I'm just getting out of bed. So maybe I'm just leaving out bad parts and just wanting to remember what I like about him.
