First post and i start it off with nitpicking a couple of typos:
“Not so urgent that you can’t turn this into a power struggle,” I said. “You got time to tell me what’s going on. Why aren’t you on the field?”
"You got time", should probably be "you'VE got time."
“There seems to be some question of leadership for the squad in the absence of the captain,” Iason said. “Frankly, I would have made the large horned fellow the captain. He seems much more stable the ogress proved to be, and he is equally as imposing physically.”
I assume it's "he seems much more stable THAN the ogress proved to be".
“Not know about that stuff makes interacting with your culture,” I said.
This should probably read "Not KNOWING about that stuff makes interacting with your culture HARD," I said. I am assuming hard, or some similar word is what you were looking for. Perhaps dangerous.
Aside from that I am very much enjoying reading both the MU stories.
So it was option 1: Iason needs his Iacolope on the field. Of course this substitution might not be allowed, or the captain might veto Iason's bright idea. Are mounts allowed under their skirmish rules, even if the mount is also a student?
Informed of the attempt on his genitalia, Iason hardly even has an "I told you so" for Jamie. Jamie is here, intact, so he obviously dealt with it, so problem solved.
I am wondering now whether there are any free sources of information on stag bracelets or stag riders. Iason does seem to be taking it for granted that Jamie's enquiries will not bear fruit. If other elves won't help, and there is no literature, where can he go? The professors of elven lore might know something, and maybe Professor Einhorn would be sufficiently removed from the elven community to give some pointers. And then there's Callahan. I don't know whether she has recognised the bracelet, but she must have picked some things about her former comrade-in-arms and her mount.
A sudden thought: does Callahan want to socialise and have people get close to her. We know she is intelligent and a mine of information and wisdom on many things, but maybe she doesn't want to be mined on anything but her own terms. Maybe part of the reason she behaves as she does is to make people keep their distance. She is one of the toughest cookies out there, but she still has sore spots that she really doesn't want people to find.
I had an odd reaction to this chapter: I really want Iason and Jamie to wipe the floor with the opposition. Does anyone remember how the skirmish match turns out?
I am loving this portion of this story! I find the characters to be even more addictive than the ones from the original MU, and often find myself thinking something fleeting about one or two of them. They feel alive. Kudos!
After having met Glitterbrat, I like Iason more and more. I see how he goes against the cultural norms of his people to try and assuage Jamie. that's actually pretty cool.

Whither will the stag run?

Excellent last haiku. May I suggest "hardest to unpack"?
