Tales of MU Chapter 347: Dream On

Author's Notes:

I know Mackenzie obliviating along for a chapter like that is among the many things that people are fairly sharply divided over the actual entertainment value of, but it's always fun to write. :)

Re: Spot the typo!

“A true warrior never runs from peril.” Then when she saw the villain’s minions, she’d start running away, and another character would go, “I thought you said a warrior never from peril.”

needs a Runs in the second quote

I wouldn’t right it so it was about me, exactly…

wrong write. X3

Hilarious. Good stuff. :D

Also, I must admit - I like having the forum be on LiveJournal, and having the ability to use my LJ Friends' list (which I check obsessively, sadly) to know when there's an update.

Agreed with all points made.

Oh, Mack... (shakes head sadly).

I think I would have enjoyed this chapter more before we knew that "Jilly" actually had been through a war. Now I can't help cringing at how stupid Mack sounds, even knowing she doesn't know.

Still, her obliviousness is, as always, entertaining.

This chapter seemed a bit un-Mackenzie like; I was really starting to wonder if some sort of possession was going on again. Sure she's been distracted in class before, but she was waaay off the planet here. The way Sooni's clothing site went from a 'pipe dream' at the start to something that 'could definitely go somewhere' rang alarm bells. Maybe some after effect from that vampiric dagger is sapping her brain, making her fantasize over ludicrous ideas while having delusions of grandeur. (In which case, I'd be a little worried about Steff at this point.)

I dunno, I think it's consistent in terms of content and attitude, even if she normally pays attention in class. Not that it really thrilled me, because ironically enough, that kind of petty self-aggrandizing bitchery is best left in high school. Yeah, yeah, freshman, but still. She's as bad as Amaranth, thinking she's smarter than everyone while acting (or daydreaming) like a complete buffoon. This is probably what Jamie sees in her between WP and Barley's take on events, so if anyone wonders why he doesn't like her, this might be a clue.

THe chapter writing was excellent, but for god was Mack petty in it. I think what bothered me most was how cruel and elitist she seemed to be when looking down at Callahan. I know they have issues and everyone has less than charitable thoughts, but it was just...very cold all at once.
Mack used to hate herself (totally wrongly) just for being a half-demon, but now that she's overcome that she seems to be slipping into some serious cruelty, at least mentally. I'm glad she's better and def. don't want her to hate herself, but hopefully she will grow to give others the same benefit of the doubt some have given her.

Actually, in this chapter she reminded me A LOT of Jamie, when he goes off on mental rants about Mack.

hmmm.

Mack should know that Callahan is a stud. Maybe not of the world class level we seem to have seen, but there are a lot of rumors and such flying around. Thinking they are all hot air is distinctly rash.

A big grade assignment like this is usually described much earlier in the course than this.

Now Mack has got to get that assignment. She ought to just fess up to the teacher that she zoned out. Not surprisingly that she didn't, but... So who does she approach?

Sooni does look a promising choice here. All sorts of interesting results if she comes begging.

January 31 2009, 05:23:45 UTC 3 years ago

I agree that she should have known there would be an assignment. I'm currently at college, and almost invariably the one or two big projects which are not detailed until later in the semester, are mentioned and briefly described on the first day of class.

They also would be on the syllabus, which I would be surprised she wouldn't have received.

I'm also surprised that even barely paying attention she didn't pick up the word "project"!

Finally, I have learned the hard way that the longer you wait to ask the professor for help, or tell them that you have no clue what you're supposed to do for the project, the worse it will get... but as stupid as I've been sometimes when it comes to stuff like that, Mackenze seems ten times more. So I'm guessing she'll agonize until it is SO much worse than it would be to just 'fess up right away...

Although I suppose she might be able to convince Sooni that a True Friend would lend her the project notes...

Once Amaranth finds out about this, Mack is going to be sleeping on her stomach for the rest of the semester.

I did stupid things like this, but I was a Junior before I did them.

This line just about killed me:

Sooni was absent from logic… it was mutual, I’m sure, but a little worrying.

I know this is off topic, but I registered for your forum nearly a week ago, with the username "Bella" and email asservitabella -at- y*hoo dotcom, and the activation code still hasn't been sent. I've checked my spam folders and even had it resent, but still nothing, so I'm wondering if there might be a glitch.

Thanks,

Re: off topic

Hi. I'm afraid the forum stopped working more or less entirely about a week ago... it can still be reached intermittently, but it's slow and it times out every time I try to post something. That's among the reasons why I've set this area up.

I haven't taken it all the way down yet because I want people who've been there to have a chance to try to grab anything they want to save from it, but for all intents and purposes this page here is now the forum.

I noticed Mackenzie making the same kind of assumptions about people that I usually complain about people making of her. it happens, I guess.

She really needs to do some spellwork. It always seems to focus and calm her. She hasn't done anything experimental since the Dee incident and she didn't exactly get to sit down and concentrate for that one.

One thing's for sure; Mack won't do the sensible thing and just make an appointment with the professor, because that would mean revealing the guy's name :P

Mackenzie Daydreams...

Right, got my Livejournal account, now let’s see if this works.

----

Knowing what we know about Callahan et al, Mack's daydreams are embarrassingly off-beam. Fortunately, since Mack isn't going to let that particular fantasy out of her head any time soon... I hope. We don't know if Steff would be able to set her straight, or whether Mack’s thoughts might come a-bubbling up and a-boiling into her mouth during mixed meleé. Callahan would probably be amused, in a violently sarcastic way, and might find it even more amusing to give Mack a run-down on her life history, just to see the look in her eyes as the scales fall away. Branching off into wild speculation, Mack might ask why Callahan hasn’t written her memoirs.

“’Cause most of it’s unprintable! Also, writing’s not my thing, and I don’t get on with literary types. Do you write stuff for fun, Emo Kid? Hah! Case in point.”

Roll forward five years, to the launch of Hydra Company – the monstrous detachment - “Mackenzie Blaise’s gripping account of the Chaos Wars from the perspective of the Empire’s previously unacknowledged women’s commando unit.”

----

There must be lots of ways for Mack to find the details of the logic assignment. The prof might well have patched it up onto the faculty weavesite. Sooni ought to let Mack copy her notes – they are friends, after all. Maliko’s discreet gloating seems to indicate that she noticed Mack zoning out right through the lecture. If she isn't discreet enough to avoid mentioning this to Sooni, Sooni might well tell her to copy out the notes for Mack: “Obvously, since I have nothing but goodwill towards Miss Mackenzie, I cannot let her suffer from her lapses.” […] “There you are, Miss Mackenzie, I made sure Maliko copied them out correctly.”

Re: Mackenzie Daydreams...

Heh, yeah. There'll be some way for Mack to get those notes. The real question is whether she'll be able to swallow her stupid pride and ask for them. I'm sure Maliko won't help her voluntarily, and Mack wouldn't consider asking her anyway. Sooni might very well be willing to share the notes with her if she asks, but that would mean having to actually talk to the real Sooni rather than her faked-up dream model fantasy version, which would not only be irritating due to the ways in which the real deal does not measure up to the fantasy but would also be embarrassing and humiliating as Sooni finds this as more evidence that Mack indeed needs her friendship in order to get by while needling Mack about her weavesite and further dismissing any thought of responsibility as the Student Senate representative for their floor.

Mack the Bitcher

so mack became a total bitch in this. she's had slight tendencies her and there, but this was a whole new level. totally spunking on jilly and assuming the worst for all her old high school and totally enjoying the thought of them being beneath her. it reminds me of when she first met sooni, sitting on the side walk. she seems to have over-developed her dislike of warrior types in to a sooni-esk "pity". in other words she's becoming the stuck up snob bitches she hates

Re: Well now.

Too true... all the folks going on and on about how bitchy and wicked and 'Un-Mack-Like' Mack is being in this daydream, and I see nothing there but typical fantasies of a typical nerd who'd been bullied and teased by typical jocks, "Move along, there's nothing to see here."

I am however still amazed at how interesting and intricate the varying differences in perspective can throw the same events into wildly divergent areas. From Jamie assuming Mack is using 'obfuscating dorkness' to lure in potential prey, to Moeli assuming Mack acts and talks like she does because she's just that brassy and bold and Rawr!, to the Fact(or is it?) that Mack spent the better part of her life locked in a basement and has the social-skills of a retarded ape to show for it.

Off-Topic, I suspect wiki-vandals are jumping around the MU wiki. I went there because I forgot Moeli's name and clicked on the entry for Oru. Got a line of Oru being a goblin, an armory major, and having a crush on Moeli, and half a page of porn-links.

Daydreaming in class
Is in a class by itself
When you stay classy

If wishes were like
Motorcycles then dreamers
Would surely ride them

As Logic dictates
And as Maliko noted
It's quite noteworthy
