Anyone else catch the subtle hypocrisy of FeeJee suggesting Mack use her capacity to reason to override her survival instincts so FeeJee can abandon her capacity to reason and indulge her predatory instincts?
It just occurred to me, a reason why FeeJee may be so hung-up on this 'Predator's precedence' thing, the idea that since she's 'The Predator' she somehow should get preference in any discussion over who's PoV should be given extra weight on the whole 'eating, being eaten' front. AFAIK out in open ocean various prey species' sole evolutionary tactic for avoiding being eaten is creative implimentation of the 'run for your life' tactic. Either pure speed, or guile or subterfuge, no direct confrontation allowed.
Would probably break her poor fishy brain if she were to hear of something like the dangerous aggressiveness of 'prey' species like Rhinos and Cape Buffalo.
But it is natural that predators eat prey, that is why we call them "predators" and "prey". FeeJee is just trying to help Mack understand her place in the Natural order of things., it is natural that predators eat prey thus it is good that predators eat prey. Of course FeeJee doesn't seem to understand that in the natural order of things Man-eating monsters such as herself exist solely so that they can be killed for XP and looted by adventurers. (In fact, it is implied that is why they originally put the Magical University in an area with lots of monsters)
And for the record, I pride myself on never having commented anything to the effect of "Ook!", "First!", or "$character sucks!", and pledge not to start doing so in the future.
Getting back to this story: strangely, I still find myself liking Feejee at least a little, though admittedly somewhat less as she's gotten more overly obsessive about the eating-Mack thing. There's something about her weird combination of creepiness and naiveté that I find oddly endearing. I do hope she'll someday be able to wrap her mind about the "friends, not food" concept, but I have to admit I'm not holding my breath. I admire Mack's patience in trying to reason with her, though.
My hope is that with the threaded discussion here, people who want to hash a character's flaws to death can do so in their own corner, as it were, without drowning out or driving away other discussion.

BTW, it's a great relief to have a place to post comments to again since our beloved forum died, even if it did have to be LiveJournal. -.- Don't ask me why but I just don't care for LJ. Also, hello Your Eminence! =D Haven't seen her ladyship Pope Lizbet in quite a while! ^_^
Hoo-rah! for the commenting bliss. and speaking of legal stuff there's something that's been bothering me for awhile now and I... Well I'm wondering... No, never mind. I'll just wait it out. E
I really enjoyed this chapter, with Mack trying to get through to Feejee. It seems it may have sunk in a little with her comparison to Feejee's inability to comprehend land, her inability to comprehend that THIS IS A BAD IDEA.
I was particularly amused when Feejee was trying to explain her incomprehension of land to Mack, and Mack didn't get it - thinking, "I'd never seen the ocean, but I'd seen rivers, ponds, pools..." - pretty much the exact same situation, only in reverse!
And it looks like Mack is going to explain to Amaranth what the mermaids are really like...
I'm hoping that Mackenzie mentions something to Dee in addition to, maybe even instead of, Amaranth. Amy's sweet and all, but Dee in general seems to have a better head on her shoulders, and would probably be better equipped to deal with a merpeople murder conspiracy.
Not a big fan Of Feejee, but I can sympathize with her a bit. Can you imagine after eating beef your whole life, if suddenly a cow said "You can't eat me, I don't want to be eaten"? Regardless of legality it would warp my mind.
In any event if a cow suddenly spoke-up and said, "Please don't eat me." That would defiantly put me off of eating that particular cow, if not off beef entirely. It certainly wouldn't put me in a mind to have a rational discourse with said cow as to why they should queue-up for the slaughterhouse like a good little lower-rung on the food chain.
AE- I have to say I like this format for forum better. I'm better able to keep straight which conversations I'm involded in and which I'm not without having to scroll up and down and refer to posting numbers, which to be honest is why I wasn't very active previously.
Does AE by chance read Reddit? I'm kind of Reddit-famous (gee, what an honor) for a post there about talking to cuttlefish in sign language, so I have to wonder if the cuttlefish = intelligent race thing had anything to do with that. Or maybe AE also talks to cuttles?
No, I'm afraid not, but as a fellow internet celebrity I e-salute you. :P Feel free to throw up a link, though.
I half expected people to link it to the xkcd strip about cuttlefish, but this actually goes back to conversations I've had with Pope Lizbet. But like Amaranth, I'm a big fan of looking for evidence of cognition in animals, whether it's the emergent intelligence behavior of colony insects or the brain capacity of cephalopods.
My very own talkative, sign language speaking cuttlefish story. I live in a state where it's almost impossible to get cuttles, unfortunately, or I'd consider setting up a tank and trying to teach them to do various entertaining things like changing color cued by flash cards or asking for treats with sign language.
Does this mean we won't have those redundant haikus in the comments anymore?
Anyway, enjoyed this chapter. Will enjoy the chapter where Mack tells Amaranth and Dee even more. Here's hoping Amaranth somehow doesn't confuse this with her judgment-clouding orgasm crusade.
