Not to gloss over all the rest, as it was a good installment (poor Lee earns his billable hours, doesn't he?), but that last line stole the chapter. I can't wait for the next installment. :)
Her and Amaranth. I can forgive Granny for intruding on Mack, since she never did get any response to her letters, but Amaranth should know better than to try to force reconciliation. Mack said no. Clearly. Several times. Time to shut up and move on.
Well its a whopper of an omission. I think its just that Mack has never known about Brimstone before she came to MU. So she never had a chance to put the facts together.
Somehow I knew that this chapter would end on a huge Granny-related cliffhanger. I kind of can't wait to see the train wreck that will be Amaranth trying to speak reasonably to Martha.
Well, she cannot deny the divine nature of Amaranth. I mean, glowing aura, healing powers, etc. etc. But she apparently finds her flesh to be corrupt nevertheless. Interesting if weird combination, but then again, fanatics are often willing to accept glaring contradictions within their dogmatic worldview.
Grannytheology states that women are inherently corrupt. It states that promiscuous sex is evil. Therefore, a nymph may have a divinely pure spirit, but she is still corrupt as a woman that exists primarily for promiscuity.
Plus, given how close Khersianity seems to be to Christianity, I'm sure there's some official church doctrine that teaches that all material objects are in some way tainted, no matter how holy a spirit may be.
So there's old Granny Blaise, So sure of a woman's place. Amy, will you see There's no way there she can be One who loves Mack? Be the girl's saving grace!
(I know, I know, too many syllables, but I think the situation merits them.)
I'm guessing she makes exceptions for herself. "It's okay if I do it, even though I'm a sinful, dirty woman, because I AM A SWORD OF KHERSIS! This is my holy calling! Any other woman who tries it is a harlot of the lowest order!" or something of the sort.
Some people in the real world think the same way. Some people, huh? (sigh)
Hm, I get what you mean. Sure, there were orders of nuns quite aggressively promoting Christianity, but the three fighting Orders (Templars, Knights of St. John and the Teutonic Knights) were exclusively male...
Those fighting orders were also based in a male-dominated medieval setting. I think if you were to carry them forward or establish them in a 20th century-equivalent setting, you'd find women among the men. Or maybe you'd find fighting nuns. Either way, I doubt that women would be barred in rhetoric and actuality.
You mean the same way the Catholic Church has accepted female priests since the 20th century arrived? And might I point out that many armed forces do still not allow women to join as true combatants instead of "just" in support roles?
I think... there's the fact that she's a woman, but then there's also the fact that she's a devout khersian with the mission to destroy all evil. While her body may be tainted through and with womanhood, as a holy warrior she is an equal to any male khersian of faith.
Womanhood doesn't really play a role for her when it comes to destroying demons, you know?
(All of the above are merely intuition-based guesses)
