Not to gloss over all the rest, as it was a good installment (poor Lee earns his billable hours, doesn't he?), but that last line stole the chapter. I can't wait for the next installment. :)

You know, it shouldn't be heard to boot Gramama off the scene, what with violence against legal counsel and blood related bias.

She nippled at her lip a little bit.

...Freudian slip?

Also oh lord, Grandma. I already want to punch her in the face.

Since Amy was nodding (and is naked) that may be accurate, if a bit kinky.

Her and Amaranth. I can forgive Granny for intruding on Mack, since she never did get any response to her letters, but Amaranth should know better than to try to force reconciliation. Mack said no. Clearly. Several times. Time to shut up and move on.

Amaranth explicitly said that the current situation is such that she was not planning to push for a reconciliation right now.

And very strongly implied that she would push for one as soon as the current situation was worked out.

Next: Brimstone.

Aha! I thought the "Brimstone Blaise" that Gloria mentioned might turn out to be Granny...!

I always assumed that was her, based on how people talked about her and given Mack's childhood. I was surprised that Mack hadn't sorted it out before.

You...were?

(lol, just kidding.)

Mack's not good at what you'd call... dedctive reasoning?

Yeah, that's kinda what I was getting at. ;)

Well its a whopper of an omission. I think its just that Mack has never known about Brimstone before she came to MU. So she never had a chance to put the facts together.

Oh snap!

Somehow I knew that this chapter would end on a huge Granny-related cliffhanger. I kind of can't wait to see the train wreck that will be Amaranth trying to speak reasonably to Martha.

I'm quite amused by the thought of Martha talking "reasonably" to Amy

[info]phantasmagoracy

I'm honestly surprised that Martha even acknowledged her "pure spirit."

Well, she cannot deny the divine nature of Amaranth. I mean, glowing aura, healing powers, etc. etc. But she apparently finds her flesh to be corrupt nevertheless. Interesting if weird combination, but then again, fanatics are often willing to accept glaring contradictions within their dogmatic worldview.

Grannytheology states that women are inherently corrupt. It states that promiscuous sex is evil. Therefore, a nymph may have a divinely pure spirit, but she is still corrupt as a woman that exists primarily for promiscuity.

Plus, given how close Khersianity seems to be to Christianity, I'm sure there's some official church doctrine that teaches that all material objects are in some way tainted, no matter how holy a spirit may be.

.... Shit. (said in a tiny, squeaky voice)

So there's old Granny Blaise,
So sure of a woman's place.
Amy, will you see
There's no way there she can be
One who loves Mack? Be the girl's saving grace!

(I know, I know, too many syllables, but I think the situation merits them.)

I'm guessing she makes exceptions for herself. "It's okay if I do it, even though I'm a sinful, dirty woman, because I AM A SWORD OF KHERSIS! This is my holy calling! Any other woman who tries it is a harlot of the lowest order!" or something of the sort.

Some people in the real world think the same way. Some people, huh? (sigh)

Hm, I get what you mean. Sure, there were orders of nuns quite aggressively promoting Christianity, but the three fighting Orders (Templars, Knights of St. John and the Teutonic Knights) were exclusively male...

[info]cursor_mortis

Those fighting orders were also based in a male-dominated medieval setting. I think if you were to carry them forward or establish them in a 20th century-equivalent setting, you'd find women among the men. Or maybe you'd find fighting nuns. Either way, I doubt that women would be barred in rhetoric and actuality.

You mean the same way the Catholic Church has accepted female priests since the 20th century arrived? And might I point out that many armed forces do still not allow women to join as true combatants instead of "just" in support roles?

I think... there's the fact that she's a woman, but then there's also the fact that she's a devout khersian with the mission to destroy all evil. While her body may be tainted through and with womanhood, as a holy warrior she is an equal to any male khersian of faith.

Womanhood doesn't really play a role for her when it comes to destroying demons, you know?

(All of the above are merely intuition-based guesses)
