1. I'm drunk. 2. I couldn't force myself to read the whole chapter. Please take the above into consideration when reading my comment. Thank you.
I fucking HATE Amaranth here. So fucking passive-agressive. "You could have ordered me." "I was trying to." Bull. Fucking. Shit. If she was trying to order Mack, she would have. She is the entire reason I had to stop reading. I'll admit, I do the same shit (expecting someone to know what I want/think the same way I do) from time to time, and maybe that's why I hate her so much. Maybe it is because I see too much of myself in her. Either way, she needs to sit down, shut the fuck up, and let life pass her by for a bit. Someday she'll learn that she can't control everything, even Mack.
I'm almost wondering if there was a little bit of "Wow, she's actually standing up for herself, even if she's being stupid. I don't know if I can bring myself to stop her."
Because we all know that Amaranth did want Mack to stop being so much of a doormat.
That actually isn't a typo, though it sure looks like one. The thing is it's sort of an archaic word we don't see all that often, even in it's present tense. The word "rue", as in the phrase "You will rue the day!", is not in very common usage these days, and its past participle, "ruing", is heard even less often. Nothing wrong with it, it just looks wrong.
“Maybe you would have failed no what you did, but you had a chance, anyway,” she said.
That should probably read "no matter what you did".
Re: rue... I'm afraid I disagree - I do think it should be "rueing". So far the research I've done has backed me up, but I'm willing to accept a transatlantic difference.
Sorry, AE - hope you don't mind a potential pedantathon breaking out in your typo thread...
What was Amaranth thinking? What was Mack thinking? How do they feel about the upcoming performance? Amaranth could have just ordered Mack to silence and made the decision for her, but didn't. Mack could have just frozen up and backed away, but didn't. I think part of them both want this, but they are, quite rightly, worried about the potential consequences. So on one level, Amaranth wanted Mack to decide on her own to agree to Caron's terms, because she didn't want the responsibility of making that decision herself. Mack made the decision because it seemed to be the way to get what would make Amaranth happy. Certainly, once they get into their roles, they'll both have fun (of different sorts) on stage. Not a good decision, with a decidedly broken path to it, but not a fatal one. We will just have to see where their motivations lead them next. >8=V>
Is there still time to go back into town and get a quarterstaff? I don't think Mack was deliberately trying not to get one. From Chapter 345: Wishes And Fishes:
That reminded me… I was supposed to get a staff or something to spar with. I’d have to try to remember that.
And when reminded that she had Mixed Melee, she remembered the staff immediately, so I think that it had just slipped her mind. However, it cannot be denied that she doesn't really want anything to do with Callahan or combat practice at all, and the whole of her mind is set against this...
As to the last encounter, guys probably just don't want to go near Amaranth when she's with the half-demon. And Leda just seems to be pissed off with her situation and doesn't see why she should pretend to be well disposed towards others.
"As to the last encounter, guys probably just don't want to go near Amaranth when she's with the half-demon."
Have you ever dated someone that a friend of yours dated, or that your brother/sister dated, or that anyone you knew dated? Did you ever have a moment where you realized you were kissing the same person they kissed, that you were doing the same things they did with this person, and that connected you in a strange way to whoever it was that came before you? I kinda think that's a bit of why Amaranth gets less offers when she's with Mack. Nobody wants to be connected to the half-demon, and people really don't want to think that they're going where the demon's gone before.
She may have remembered it but it wasn't exactly an "Oh no!" reaction. My reaction was "good grief, she didn't forget the fact that she needed to get a staff, she just ignored it?!"
Why do I keep hearing the whistle of an approaching train? This just cannot end well... Ah well, if Mack's life were all Roses and Unicorns it would make for a dull read.
So much to comment on in this chapter! I think maybe Amaranth is starting to realize just how poorly she actually understands Mack. That girl needs some serious help getting her head screwed on straight and it's time Amaranth knew that. Of course Amaranth could use a little help in that department too. Those two could seriously use some professional counseling. Failing that, spending more time talking with Dee would be a step in the right direction.
Speaking of which, the quarterstaff Mack needs for Mixed Melee isn't the only thing she's been forgetting lately. She hasn't had a single meditation session with Dee since she decided to start doing them regularly, has she? I wonder when Dee's gonna bring that up.
At least the issue of the quarterstaff has finally come up. I can foresee a major lecture by Amaranth and some new rules coming up shortly. Mack has GOT to start taking that class seriously. She needs it far more than she'll admit.
That was a very lovely scene between Mack and Amy in the carriage coming home... and heading back into town again and coming home again. XD Connecting on such a deep emotional level will do a lot more to keep them together in the long run than all the hot sexxors in the world. Of course dissing her goddess like that was a rather ill-advised thing for Amy to do, especially considering that Mother Khaele has the final say on whether the two of them can remain together. Amy still needs to clean out her ears too. If she can't or won't hear Mother Khaele's thunderous disapproval of such an attitude she's going to wind up getting herself into some serious trouble.
Not really. She found the pitchfork and the university said she could keep it. Sounds like it's hers to me. If you mean it's scary because of the demonic bit, I don't think that's an issue either. It's not like she means "As soon as I find the infernal (in every sense of the word) thing, I'm gonna start wielding it." It's more like "As soon as we find this thing and get it de-infernalized, I'm gonna wield it." I think the bigger problem is that she expected to get it back so soon and didn't have any contingency plans.
“She thought Mercy wanted me for hamburger,” I said.
“Actually, she couldn’t sell you as hamburger, because under Imperial law, only one hundred percent beef can… okay, wrong time for fun facts,” Amaranth said.
“I want you to sit on the bench this time, Mack,” she said, pointing to the back-facing one as she sat on the other. I obeyed, after taking off my dripping coat and putting it down on the floor. My seat was going to be pretty wet no matter what, but there was no sense soaking it. Amaranth let out a sigh. “Did you not hear me trying to get your attention?” : : : “So, not the ones you really wanted,” I said. I lightly touched the front of my coat, over where my nipples were. “Not these ones.”
Though I have to say I am starting to dislike Amy being a hypocrite. She just griped at Caron over calling Mack stupid.
I'm beginning to wonder if this chapter isn't the one that starts the lead up to Honey's dream starts to come true, especially given the fact that Mack has forgotten how long it has been since the last time she's "eaten".
I enjoyed this a lot (more than I thought when I'd skipped here to start adding typos that had already been started on and saw the snarking), because of the - sorry, no other word for it - humanity of Amaranth and Mack's relationship displayed here. I've had arguments-and-making-up-sex like this before (especially with women!) and the reality of Mack's words gushing forth from her and the shyness of their expectation of love and desire made it feel all the more real.
A corker. Leda troubles me, though, and not just because of the premonition of her doom. She's hard and rapacious and spoiled and disturbing and feels like a fall to distant, sharp rocks all precariously balanced and waiting to happen. Another example of AE's excellent writing.
Hm-mm lets not forget Mack although is not voiced seems a little clairvoyant . As her dreams at least about sex have come to fruition . And Mack had a dream about Mercy chasing Mack in a chariot being pulled by her 2 brutes . And throwing Pitchy at her time and time again . Seems like a possible foreshadowing trick again to possibly mislead us but only AE knows for sure .

Amaranth should know:
It's not nice to fudge around
With Mother Nature
Naked swan maiden
Is enough to make the guys
Follow the Leda
It's surprising that
The site's only H18
Not H21

Typos
Since there isn't a typo thread yet, I might as well start one...“What’s it going matter what they mean if she sell you to Mercy?”
Should be sells, with an s, I think.
